Alumni

Graduates have been in continual contact with department faculty and volunteer their steadfast appreciation for the education they received in this department.  If you would like to add your letter, news, or other announcements, please contact us.

One student writes, “I recently graduated from law school with high honors, and I just completed a legal fellowship with Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.  I regularly relied upon the principles learned from the Department of Philosophy to succeed in both of these contexts.  In fact, Senator Clinton’s office recognized my ability to persuade using grounded, philosophical arguments early on.  To date, Senator Clinton has delivered five major speeches that I have drafted.”

Another adds:  “I may be a historian by chosen vocation and degree, but in reality, I am a philosopher.  No classes at Millikin did more for my thinking, my sense of being and place in the world, and my awareness of the world and the really key questions of humanity and society than did those of my philosophy classes….Exposure to [philosophy] enlivens the heart and mind and offers everyone who dips their toe into it or plunges head first into it a chance to see the world free of the dogma and restrictions of society, religion, and culture.  That a person who confronts philosophy may return to their original thinking is not the issue; that they now are responsible for it is.”

A third alum continues: “In the end, what matters in an education is having been instructed, specifically, having been given the guidance to do two things.  The first is to learn to think for one’s self.  The second, and most important, is to truly learn that the unexamined life is not worth living and that a life worth living is one based on virtue.  These are the two lessons I have learned from Jo Ellen Jacobs and Robert Money.”
