Casey Lawson, Senior Communication Student:
Interning at Decatur Public School district has brought me many
opportunities to learn and grow as a future Public Relations
specialist. For my internship I am in charge of Franklin Elementary
Schools external communication on the internet, social media sites, and
print media. I have the freedom of generating my own content for these
outlets, and programming them for our sites. I've learned how to use
various different programs such as Hoot Suite, Cast Net, and our website
programming system. It is very rewarding to see how many people my
communication outlets reach, and the accomplishments I've had at DPS
have allowed me to build my résumé. I could not be more thankful for
Emily Kissel, Senior Communication Major:
“For the past six months I have been interning for Investment Planners, Inc., the home office for a financial firm. As a part of my internship, I assist our advisors in just about every state with various marketing projects. The largest portion of my internship demands my time to be used planning upcoming meeting and events. Right now, we are getting ready for a winter meeting in Texas. It is thanks to my internship that I have decided to pursue a career in corporate event management. I have been able to do so many different things with my internship, how many can say they have booked flame throwers, and former Super bowl winners for their companies conference. I have been lucky enough to continue my summer internship into the school year. Investment Planners has allowed me to use my knowledge gained in school and apply it to new projects every day.”
Monica Idec, Senior Communication Major:
“Working for the Decatur Public School system has been an experience that I have grown from immensely. I was put into William Harris Elementary School to help with their communication with the Decatur Community. They already had a Facebook and with that I have been able to grow the audience by 20 followers. Every time the Facebook page is mentioned it is always positive and they love all the pictures they get to see of the students working in their classrooms. Working with the staff has been a little difficult because they don't think that what they are doing in their classrooms is important, however it is very important and the Decatur community gets to see what their children learn in school, provided that teachers get their stories told. I have learned to be patient and think ahead of schedules in order to get deadlines complete. I have been able to grow professionally and individually in a work environment and I have learned to be careful of what is right and wrong for social media. Overall this experience has been one that I can use in my future endeavors.
Alexis Rogers, Sophomore Communication Student:
Being a communication major student at Millikin University is rewarding because of all the support a student receives. Through the year and half I have been at Millikin, I have had the most wonderful experience being a communication student. The faculty and staff in the department have been very helpful and supportive through my college career so far. I know I could count on any one of the staff to take the time out of their day to help me with an issue or problem. After having Dr. Curtin, Dr. Braun, Professor Meister, Professor Rueter, Professor Hensley, and Dr. Duncanson or T-Dunc as we all know him as, I will say that it’s even so hard for me to pick my favorite professor out of the bunch because they are all so wonderful. I can’t tell you the times that I was stressed and just walking into a classroom with a communication professor lightened up my day tremendously. Every professor in the department has a very bubbly and happy personality. Being a student and being around the atmosphere that is created by communication professors is making me have the best college experience possible. Being a communication major means having the best faculty on campus at Millikin University. With the tutelage of these individuals, I am bound to get a fantastic job and a great start to my career. The communication department at Millikin is the best around and I know I am going to succeed after college because of the experience and excellent education I am currently receiving here at MU.
