Professor Art Canning is a graduate of Indiana University with a B.A. in Psychology and Economics and an M.B.A. in Industrial and Labor Relations. He worked in the automotive industry for over 40 years with such companies as Chevrolet Division, Fansteel Inc., Sun Electric Corp., Tempel Steel Co. and ZEXEL USA Corp. He was at the Vice President level of Human Resources for the past 20 years and was responsible for all H.R. functions in multi-plant operations involving union and non-union facilities for American, French and Japanese Corporations.
Professor Canning also served as inside counsel on employment law and represented the company in dealing with outside government agencies on personnel issues. He has had direct involvement in downsizing, mergers, joint ventures, organizational restructuring, policy and procedure development, cost containment in pension and benefit areas, hourly and salary administration, and labor contract negotiations.
In addition, he has been associated with Millikin University for the last 10 years, as a professor, in both the undergraduate and graduate level programs of the Tabor School of Business and taught for the PACE Program.
Further, he has been a consultant to industry in the Human Resource Management field, guided companies through union campaigns, negotiated labor contracts, and worked for municipalities establishing policies and negotiating their labor contracts for city employees and police.
