Dr. Leroy (Roy) Wehrle brings experience to the classroom from a lifetime of work in international, national and state governmental work along with executive experience running a business and many years of teaching at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

 

Dr. Wehrle graduated from Washington University, served as an officer in the U.S. Army and earned a Ph.D. in Economics with honors from Yale University in 1959.  He served in the Foreign Service from 1959 to 1967 where he was Associate Aid Director in Laos and Vietnam and also Economic Counselor to the Ambassador including ambassadors Lodge, Taylor and Bunker.

 

He was a Senior Economist in President Kennedy’s Council of Economic Advisors where he was responsible for international economic issues. President Johnson appointed him chair of Committee Twelve of a National Academy Study of world food and agricultural prospects.  President Nixon appointed him to the Rockefeller Team to Survey US policy in Latin America during which the team visited all Latin American countries. 

 

He was a Fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University and was Senior Economist at the Brookings Institution in Washington D.C.

 

In 1970 Dr. Wehrle was appointed director of the Institute of Social Policy of the State of Illinois by Governor Ogilvie.  In 1971 he was Director of Research for Lt. Governor Paul Simon.

 

In 1972 he was appointed Professor at Sangamon State University in the Economics Department, now the University of Illinois.  In 1987 he joined in creating and led a national business called HEMA which provided health cost management services to self-insuring corporations. 

 

In 1997 Dr. Wehrle returned to teaching at the University of Illinois concentrating on environmental theory and practice, and international relations and foreign policy.

He was a member of the inaugural faculty of the Millikin MBA program in 2000 and has taught the MB520 international class since then.
