Site: The Open Boat Hypertext
Web Author: Daniel Anderson

This Web hypertext provides both an online text and a site supporting interaction between readers and the text. Using Web-based forms, readers can add annotations to the text of the short story by Stephen Crane. Because the text incorporates reader commentary as hyperlinks, it represents a kind of critical edition containing numerous glosses. Since most of the glosses have been added by student readers and the site also contains student-created teaching materials, the site also represents a learning artifact documenting student interpretation and meaning making efforts. Finally, because the text allows continual modification through the use of its annotation feature, the site offers instructors an online teaching space where they can send students to join in the communal constructions of this evolving text.
