Thomas Hampson, baritone and composer, presented a PBS program on American song and its cultural and literary context in 1997; this web site is an outgrowth of that program. It is an extraordinary interdisciplinary look at the relationship of music and literature, complete with videos, Real Audio songs, a Timeline, and an archived Forum. But most valuable for literature teachers are the linked biographies and passages from nineteenth-century and some twentieth American writers, primarily the Transcendentalists and Whitman and reviews of Artists, Movements, and Ideas of the nineteenth century.
