Site: Local Color: Regional Writing in the United States, 1870-1910
Web Author: Dorothy Traverse
URL: http://www.traverse.net/people/dot/default.html
This extensive and internally well-linked hypertext site by Dorothy Traverse contains extended essays on the literature of local color, especially on the literary quarrels and controversies surrounding the movement. Authors featured here include Harriet Beecher Stowe, Bret Harte, and Sarah Orne Jewett, among others, but it also contains information about and works by more obscure local color writers, such as Philander Deming and Ruth McEnery Stuart. Although this site is not updated frequently, graphics and a good use of color make it a good site for students at all levels, not merely researchers.
