Oddly enough, this continuing project on American history, economy, government, and literature originated with a computer-skills class in Holland and USIA booklets on American history and literature. Kathryn VanSpanckeren compiled the literature portion, which is basically An Outline of American Literature with links to internal primary texts, a growing list of related essays, and Internet sites. It is a work in progress, accepting essays of high quality (most are on history at this point) and more primary texts. The site is intended to be used for student research, and does offer useful context for the literature survey, although the literature sites themselves, coming largely from the handbook, are similar to anthology headnotes. Although this may be more useful for high school students, it could be valuable to college students who have little background in American history and culture.
