Customize Your Course With New Technology
McKendree College

July 31-August 1, 1997

Workshop Abstract

Customize Your Course With New Technology is a workshop about how to transform an existing course into a "technologized" course. The main emphasis is that technology can't simply be "velcroed" onto an existing course. The technology must be tailored to fit the demands of particular courses from the beginning.

Another main point is that any traditional teaching method--fieldwork, homework, lecturing, readings, etc. can be supplemented or enhanced by new technology.

Workshop Sessions

The workshop opened with a keynote address by Elaine Lawless on how and why she got into teaching with technology. She shared her academic journey and how she turned to technology "on a whim, a total whim, two years ago." She has learned to use listservs and web pages for student interaction, writing and publishing ongoing course archives.

The "Customizing You Course With New Technology" workshops were organized as special breakout groups from similar disciplines.
