CRITICAL REPORT OF PUBLISHED WORK
Due Date: November 30, 1998
Points: 150

You may work with a partner or group of three if you choose.  In that case, group members will all receive the same grade for the critical paper/presentation.

Guidelines:
You (or your group) will prepare a 3-4 page essay on one work (sophisticated literature) of a recently published author and present your report to the class (7-10 minutes; see schedule for presentation dates). To complete the project, you (or group) will

•  Read critically a published poem(s), story, or play not in our text and published since 1950.

• Analyze the piece according to the ideas and techniques presented in our Minot text and/or other critical reviews

• Consider the author's world view or perspective about life in shaping the meaning of the selection.

• Write up your findings in an organized way and prepare a creative presentation.

• Provide a copy of the selection for each member of the class when you present (either printed copy or on computer).

Written report format:

1. Brief description of the poem(s), story, or play and the author's world view as presented in the selection.
2. Discussion of specific techniques that make the piece sophisticated or good. Illustrate your analysis with representative examples from the selection and make connections between this selection and other published pieces, if appropriate.  This section is the "meat" of the paper.
3. Works cited. Follow MLA format for proper documentation and include a works cited page if you use outside sources.
4. Option: you may create a web page report instead of a print report for this assignment if you choose.

• Highlight your findings in your presentation; make it interesting, insightful and concise.  Creativity is important.
• Your presentation should note connections between your selection and the Minot text.
• Each group member must participate in the presentation.
• Your grade (150 points) for this paper will be based on both the product and presentation. See evaluation criteria below.
