Beals
to receive
2004 Lindsay Medallion Award

Andy Beals of Mattoon,
Ill., a 2003 graduate, is the recipient of this year’s Lindsay
Medallion, an award presented annually to honor outstanding Millikin
student-athletes. The award was inspired by and first presented to
the late Mr. and Mrs. F. Merrill Lindsay in 1997 in
recognition of their $1 million gift to fund improvements to the
track and field facility at Frank M. Lindsay Field. Beals is being
recognized for his excellence in football and will receive the
Lindsay Medallion during a special ceremony held before the start of
the Sept. 18 Big Blue football game.
Beals
is Millikin’s all-time leading scorer and the most decorated
kicker in Big Blue history. While at Millikin, he set five Big Blue
records: career points (277), career kicking points (277), career
points after touchdown (163), career field goals (38) and
consecutive points after touchdown (31). He also set or tied five
CCIW records: single game kicking points (tied with 17), season
field goals (tied with 11), season kicking points (59), career field
goals (31) and career kicking points (188). During his last season
as a player, he was nationally ranked by the NCAA for average field
goals per game (1.2).
Beals
was named a first team Academic All-American by the College
Sports Information Directors of America in 2003. He was
chosen as a third team Hewlett-Packard All-American place kicker in
2002 and was named a third team All-American by the National Weekly
Football Gazette in 2003. He
was twice named a CCIW first team all-conference selection
(2001, 2003) during his Millikin career. In both 2002 and 2003,
Beals was a first team academic all-district selection, and he earned
second team honors in 2001. He was a four-year letter winner
in football and also lettered for three years on the Big Blue’s
baseball team.
“Andy
is a person of great character and integrity who strives to excel in
all aspects of his life,” says Doug Neibuhr ’75, head football
coach. “He was a very significant contributor on the football
field while setting a standard for achievement in the classroom that
all of our student-athletes involved in football aspire to attain.
He is an outstanding representative of our football program and our
university.”
Beals
was also a member of the Millikin Marketing Association while a
student. He completed his bachelor’s degree in business management
in December 2003, graduating summa cum laude. He currently works as
an operational supervisor for Caterpillar Inc. in Decatur and plans
to earn a master’s degree in business administration.
“Any
successes I might experience in the future should be attributed to
my parents and the fact that I gained good values and a great
education during my time at Millikin,” Beals says.
The
Lindsay Medallion presented to Beals was designed by the late Steve
Spangler, a member of the class of 1968, and based on original
artwork created by Millikin track and field alumnus Bob Nellis
’90.
