Sunday, Oct. 14
On campus - The Millikin Symphonic Band will perform a patriotic tribute concert, “An American Salute” in the Kirkland Fine Arts Center at 2 p.m. Col. Thomas Rotondi Jr. '74, leader and commander of the U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own,” is guest conductor. Rotondi will receive a 2007 Alumni Merit Award during the evening.

Naperville, Ill. - Annual Howard Nyberg Football Party for alumni and friends, a pre-game warm up from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Features Bar and Grill, 10 W. Chicago Ave. (Chicago Ave at Washington St.). Pay as you go and order off luncheon menu (sandwiches, wraps, salads, homemade soups). RSVP toll free to 1-877-JMU-ALUM (568-2586) so we can reserve enough seats. HURST RECEIVES ALUMNI MERIT AWARD.
Steve Hurst ’70, originally of Decatur and currently bureau chief for The Associated Press (AP) in Baghdad, received a 2007 Millikin Alumni Merit Award for an outstanding career in journalism. Due to his work schedule, Hurst (pictured above with Jan Devore, director of alumni relations, and Peg Smith Luy '75, vice president for university development) cannot attend Millikin’s Homecoming award ceremonies so he received his award during intermission of the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra concert last Saturday. Hurst will also present "Iraq Today Through a Journalist’s Eyes" during Millikin’s celebration of International Month on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. in Pilling Chapel. This event is free and open to the public.

WOMEN'S SOCCER STARTS STRONG.
The women's soccer team earned two more victories last week, outscoring its opponents 12-1 to improve to 5-1 on the young season. The team is only five goals shy of tying the single-season record of 37 set in 2005. MORE

Calling all young alumni: A new event has been added to the Homecoming schedule, and it's just for you! Join us for a double bracket, two-player bags tournament Saturday, Oct. 6, at the alumni and development center. The tournament begins at 4 p.m. following sign-ups at 3:15 p.m. Snacks and refreshments provided with a cash bar available. For more info or to RSVP, e-mail Paul Scherschel '04 of the alumni and development office. (RSVPs appreciated, but not required.)
Also just added: Alumni are invited to visit Blue Connection, Millikin's student run art gallery, from 5-7:30 p.m. for a Friday, Oct. 5, After 5 Live event featuring the ceramic and sculpture pieces of senior art major Ed Hirsch. A special happy hour and early showing for alumni begins at 4 p.m. Snacks, drinks and live entertainment provided.

Been keeping up with your creative side? Then submit to Collage, Millikin's literary magazine. This fall, the English department is producing an issue of Collage featuring the creative work of Millikin alumni. If you’ve recently written any poems, fiction, nonfiction or drama, or have visual art you want to share with your fellow alums, the editors would love to see your work. Click here for a complete set of submission guidelines. Submissions are due electronically by Oct. 29, 2007. All alumni who submit will receive a free copy of the fall 2007 issue of Collage. Bronze Man Books is producing a Millikin University Haiku Anthology, a publication that will celebrate and showcase the work of the Millikin haiku community. The anthology will collect the best haiku by current and former students, staff and faculty at Millikin in addition to featuring new haiku through open submission. MORE

Central Illinois high school art teachers are encouraged to submit their best student art pieces in the first annual High School Invitational Art Show hosted by Millikin’s art department and the Center for Entrepreneurship. MORE
WHO SAYS YOU CAN'T COME HOME?
Homecoming is time to come together, catch up and reflect on Millikin memories. (Several of you have already begun recollecting with the assistance of last month's question. Click here to read some memories of the annual trip to Allerton Park). But besides reminiscing, it's also a time to recognize those alumni who go above and beyond. This year Millikin is honoring several alumni with awards during the annual, and always inspirational, alumni awards dinner on Friday, Oct. 5.
