GIFT DATE DIGEST

Want to make a charitable gift to Millikin before the end of 2004? There's still time. 

Here's a digest that reflects the rules we use when we include a "gift date" in our gift acknowledgement letter to donors. Our rules reflect our understanding* of the current IRS rules on the dating of charitable gifts. Please note that establishing a date of gift is the responsibility of the donor.*

PLEASE NOTE:  Millikin University, including the Alumni and Development Office, will close for the holidays on Dec. 23, 2004, and will reopen for business Jan. 3, 2005. If you have an urgent giving matter during that time, you may call 217-424-6383 for assistance.

For gifts made via credit card online at www.millikin.edu/alumni/gifts.html, we put the following date on our gift acknowledgment letter:
The date that the credit card gift is processed by Millikin University (which is the same as the date that will appear on your credit card statement.) 

For gifts made via credit card that are mailed to our office, we put the following date on our gift acknowledgment letter:
The postmark date on the envelope in which it is mailed.

For gifts made by check, we put the following date on our gift acknowledgment letter:
The postmark date on the envelope if it is mailed; or
The date it is received by an agent of Millikin University if it is hand-delivered.

For gifts made by electronic transfer of shares of stock, we put the following date on our gift acknowledgment letter:
The date that electronically transferred shares reach Millikin's account  (this is not always the same date that you direct your broker to make the transfer.)  

For mailed gifts of stock certificates, we put the following date on our gift acknowledgment letter:
The date of the postmark of the latter of the two necessary separately-mailed documents (the signed stock power(s) and the stock certificate(s).)
