When, where, and how did you first meet at Millikin?
Philip: We first met while going back early for RA training. We did not know each other before that, and I asked Alex Howard, one of my best friends, who was the cute girl that I didn’t know.
Christine: At the very beginning of August 2009, we met at Millikin during RA training after hanging out with a mutual friend.
What do you remember about the first time meeting each other?
Philip: I remember being very nervous and trying to get to know as much as I could right away, as I didn’t know if I would get another chance to talk to the pretty girl with brown hair. I had an instant crush on her!
Christine: Those dimples! He made me laugh all the time and every time he smiled, I thought his dimples were the cutest thing I’d seen! I remember having such a crush on him before I even knew him because of that smile.
What did you do on your first date?
Philip: I remember doing a variety of things. I remember putting on a dance party just so I could dance with her. I remember talking about choir. I also specifically remember watching movies often.
Christine: We went to Starbucks and sat outside because it was beautiful out! Choir results had just been posted, so we had a lot to talk about. (Any choir alumni would understand how huge that moment was!)
Where was your favorite place to hang-out together at Millikin?
Philip: I would say that we hung out at the music building often, but we also hung out at Delta Sig and Tri Delta a lot!
Christine: Sometimes, we would meet up with each other on the quad between classes. It could have been for only 20 minutes, but it was always nice to stop running around for those 20 minutes of the day and just enjoy each other’s company.
What is your most memorable Millikin experience as a couple?
Christine: Tri Delta and Delta Sig formals!
Where has your relationship taken you since Millikin?
Philip: After I graduated, I stayed in Decatur and worked a variety of jobs so I could be close to Christine. Then I got a job back home in Iowa, and we lived a state away from each other for two years while she was in grad school at NIU. We were lucky to see each other one weekend a month. We became engaged in January 2012 and were married last July 27 on the island of Kauai. It was an awesome experience that we were able to share with quite a few Millikin grads/friends. We then moved to Grapevine, Texas, and we each work at a school. I work in the special education department and will also be coaching numerous sports. I am also continuing my music career gigging out.
Christine: After I graduated, we lived in separate states for two years while I was in grad school. We would visit each other about once a month, usually for a day or two, though it never seemed like enough time. Phil proposed on January 16, 2012, when he came to visit me, and it was one of the most exciting days because it meant that our long distance relationship was coming to an end soon. We were married on the beautiful island of Kauai on July 27, 2013. It was a perfect day filled with family and a group of our Millikin friends! Shortly after the wedding, we moved to Texas because I got a job teaching private voice lessons at a huge high school and Phil got a job working with special needs students and coaching at an academy. Phil is also playing gigs around the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.
What advice would you give young couples in love at Millikin?
Philip: Never forget to make time for the other. Sometimes it will get tough, but always end each night on a high note. Learn to laugh and smile a lot! Enjoy hanging with each other’s friends and trying new things!
Christine: No matter how busy you get with everything you’re involved in at Millikin or after, never give up on something that has brought you and your soul mate so much happiness. It is not always easy, but it is worth it. The best is yet to come!
