Name: Giovanni Eric Pasotto ’04

Current job position (or additional field of study) and where: Managing Director – Centro Studi Italiani

Millikin major: Marketing major, Music minor

Why did you choose MU?

I chose Millikin because it was very different and much more personal than all other schools. This was pretty obvious from the get-go. What I liked about Millikin right away was the flexibility that was given to me in creating my own personal academic path and the diversity of the offered programs. As an international student, I was given all the available options and opportunities. This is not always the case in other schools.

What activities did you participate in as a student?

When at Millikin, I kept myself very busy! My schedule was always packed and that is how I liked it. My junior year, I joined Delta Sigma Phi and was the social chair of my fraternity for an entire year. One year, I co-chaired Fall Family Weekend and I was in Concert Choir three out of my four years. I assisted the professor with the Italian classes for several semesters, and my last year, I was on Homecoming court. Life on campus was never dull and always fun!

Who was your most memorable MU professor and why?

All of my professors were great but one stood out: my academic advisor, Sharon Alpi! What would I have done without her?! She had such a great impact on both my professional and personal development over those four years at Millikin. She kept me on track and has always been there for me! Today, I am lucky to call her a colleague and a dear friend. She is one of the main reasons why I love Millikin so much!

What is your most memorable MU experience?

Graduation day, of course! I was so proud of myself and everything I was able to accomplish over those four years. When your name is called and you walk across that stage, you feel the weight of how much work you put into that dreamed-of diploma come off your shoulders! I was very lucky to have my family and friends with me on that special occasion. That is a day I will never forget for the rest of my life!

What is one concept you learned at Millikin that you use in your work regularly?

No one will ever feed you the right answers and make it easy on you. It does not work that way! You, and only you, are the one who has to figure it all out in the end! Work, and life in general, are nothing but a collage of “tools” and experience. The way you combine them and with whom you share your result is what makes all the difference.

What do you enjoy most about your current job?

As a managing director of an international language school, traveling and meeting new people is what I enjoy most! I enjoy very much the wonderful relationships I have with all our international partners and of course, the students! There are days when they function as my “energy bar.” They give me wonderful waves of inspiration and enormously rewarding feedback.

What have you done that you are most proud of since graduating from MU?

Taking over the family business in an amazing collaborative effort with my sisters. We did and still are making all of the necessary changes so that the business is up to date with the current times. We are constantly making sure the school grows solidly so it will be strong enough to face the inevitable future challenges.

Where do you hope to be five years from now?

Still involved with international education, ideally with one or two more school branches around Italy and maybe an innovative connection with a new country. India is on my list!

What advice would you give to current Millikin students about preparing for life after graduation?

Work as hard as you can and try to go abroad at least once in your life! Global experiences are important in the process of understanding and respecting differences between human beings.
