Millikin University > Alumni & Friends > Stay Connected > MY Times > Posts > Career Corner: Get SMART About Goals for 2014

As the new year begins to unfold, consider your professional goals along with your personal goals as you make plans for the year ahead.

It can be easy to make several resolutions and begin to feel overwhelmed or forget those commitments just a few short weeks after you made them. Instead, consider setting goals that you find manageable. To help keep you on track, use the SMART format: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-Bound. Following are two examples:

  • Perhaps you are looking to better maintain your network in 2014. Your SMART objective could be to have two networking lunches a week over the next three months to help maintain relationships.
  • Or you may feel that you would like to build leadership experience outside of your workplace. Your objective might be by January 2015, volunteer for the position of fundraising committee chair for a non-profit organization you’re involved with, and serve a six-month term in that position.

Take time to create objectives that can make a positive impact on your professional life and also support your larger career goals. Make 2014 a great year!
