This summer, Millikin has partnered with  Decatur Public Schools to host a six-week SMASH (Students@Millikin Academic Summer Holiday) Camp for gifted students in sixth through eighth grades. Campers focus on one of five areas of study: health, energy, food science, theatre arts and media. Community SMASH demonstrations are scheduled for Saturday, July 14, from 4-9 p.m. in Decatur’s Fairview Park. Learn more at www.dpssmashcamp.org.

Re: A SMASHing good time.

I thought that we had generally passed or overcome the term "gifted" in our society, or at least among educators and academics.  My modestly unfavorable experiences with the term in younger schooling aside, it doesn't seem that it would promote much motivation in or respect the efforts of those not deemed "gifted", by whatever likely at least partially subjective means.  While it is certainly good and noble to bring high-achieving younger students together at the university to foster collaboration and the formulation of seminal and innovative ideas, it seems that a better term or phrase structure could have been here (and in any promotional literature) employed, such as "...for motivated students in..." or "...for academically outstanding students in..."
