Shilling in Spring

March 20 is the official first day of spring. So even if there is still snow on the ground where you are, take comfort in knowing that all winters come to an end … even this one!

St. Louis Science Center

Fred Haise, Apollo 13 astronaut and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, will present “Failure is Not an Option” at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 22, in Kirkland Fine Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public; no tickets or reservations required.

Best known as a crew member on the ill-fated Apollo 13 lunar mission, Haise began his 20-year NASA career as an aeronautical research pilot, serving on the backup crew for the Apollo 8, 11 and 16 missions. Haise’s presentation is the 2014 T.W. Samuels Lecture.

For the seventh consecutive year, a Millikin team took top honors at the Model Illinois Government Moot Court Competition Simulation held earlier this month in Springfield. 

Nearly 300 students from more than 20 colleges and universities throughout the state participate in the simulation each year.

Of the seven MU teams participating, five made the quarterfinal round, three made the semi-final round and two teams made the finals. Several of the MU students also won individual awards.

St. Louis Science Center

Three top music students will compete for the 2014 Hollis Prize Saturday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Kaeuper Hall, Perkinson Music Center. Performing in the free recital are finalists are Adam Blakey (saxophone), a senior music performance major from Decatur; Jonathan Rodriguez (percussion), a senior music performance major from Tucson, Ariz., and Chelsea Wright (mezzo-soprano), a senior vocal performance major from Bloomington, Ill. The award is made possible through a gift from Dr. C. Kimm Hollis ’72, department chair and professor of music at Hanover College in Hanover, Ind.

The admission office will host its first annual Field Day for admitted students Saturday, March 22. Designed as a sample “day in the life,” Field Day participants are can attend sample classes, meet with current students, and browse through an involvement fair featuring information on athletics, student programs and Residence Life.

President White

Dr. Patrick White was the featured speaker at the Greater Decatur Chamber of Commerce breakfast held March 5. Speaking on the relevance of higher education, Dr. White discussed Millikin’s commitment to performance learning and the university’s relationship with the Decatur community. In addition to several dozen business leaders, the breakfast was attended by students from MacArthur High School who are planning to enroll at Millikin.

St. Louis Science Center

The John “the Penguin” Bingham Scholarship will be awarded for the first time at this year’s Penguin in the Park 5K run/walk, set for 9 a.m., Saturday, March 29, in Decatur’s Fairview Park. The scholarship benefits sports management students at Millikin.

Millikin alumni, faculty, staff and students who register for the race by Saturday, March 22, will receive a $1 discount on the registration fee. Visit penguin5k.com to register for the race. After the race, Bingham will discusses fitness based on his years as a columnist for Runners’ World and Competitor magazines. And don’t forget the post-race party, when the first scholarship recipient will be announced.


Dr. Cedric Pearce, CEO and chief scientific officer of North Carolina-based Mycosynthetix Inc., will present “Mycosynthetix: a bootstrapped life-style science-based business” at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 27, in Leighty-Tabor Science Center.

Dr. Pearce is a scientifically-trained entrepreneur with more than thirty years of technical and management experience.

The University Center Board will host Siblings Weekend at Millikin April 4-5.

Alumni, faculty and staff are invited to bring their children to the weekend's festivities, which feature a chance for brothers and sisters of current students to spend the weekend with their older sib(s). Activities include a free showing of Disney's "Frozen."

Doc Golden

Last month, a two-day email and social media blitz invited alumni and friends to help raise $35,000 to name the “green room” in the planned new Center for Theatre and Dance in honor of the late Doc Golden, former department chair. More than 100 people responded, pledging $21,542 over the two-day period. Thanks to all who donated!

Efforts will continue until the needed funds are raised to name the space in Doc's memory, per MU board policy. Please help us reach the goal in Doc's memory by giving today.
