The News-Gazette (Champaign, Ill.)

Norman Waldo Hassler, 90, of Savoy, formerly of Champaign, passed away at 3:35 p.m. Friday (Aug. 12, 2011) at the Champaign-Urbana Regional Rehab Center in Savoy.

He was born March 1, 1921, in Belleville, the son of Waldo John and Lillian M. (Simpson) Hassler. He married Nelda M. Clayton on June 13, 1943, in Blue Mound. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Sheila Jane Ray of Huntsville, Ala.; two sons, John Michael (Mike) Hassler of Oconomowoc, Wis., and Kerry W. Hassler of Louisville, Colo; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hassler was employed in the grocery business as a manager and supervisor, having worked for the Piggly-Wiggly, Eisner and Jewel food stores. In 1958 he and his family moved from Decatur to Champaign. After his retirement, he continued working as a gatekeeper for the University of Illinois Assembly Hall.

In 1943, Mr. Hassler was awarded a bachelor of arts degree from Millikin University in Decatur, majoring in English and history.

He was a member of First Baptist Church at Savoy and the University Club. His hobbies included bowling and bridge. He was an avid Cubs fan.
