The Beacon-News (Chicago)

Newell, R. Steven "Steve," 67, born on October 5, 1943 to Marian Jeter Newell and the late Frank Samuel Newell, passed away unexpectedly on August 6, 2011, in Alaska. Steve loved spending time with family and friends, who will all miss his fun-loving, generous spirit and unique sense of humor.

He is survived by his mother: Marian Jeter Newell of Wheaton, IL; children: Mari Newell of Hilliard, OH; and Derek (Brianne) Newell of Norwalk, OH; his grandchildren: Nicholas, Grace, Tristan, and Alexis; his brother David (Mary) Newell of Cedarburg, WI; his sister Janet (Bill) Burlison of Winfield, IL; as well as his cousin, uncle, nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

Steve graduated from Millikin University with a Bachelor of Arts, and from the University of Wyoming with a Masters Degree of Science and Mathematics. His career path within the defense industry included a decade with the US Government at an arsenal in Illinois, a decade in independent research at Battelle Institute in Ohio, and two decades with the major contractors Honeywell, Alliant and Lockheed Martin in Minnesota and New Jersey. Steve's interests were wide-ranging, from independent films and live theater to sports.

He enjoyed a world-class interest in soccer, attending World Cup matches in Germany and various games state-wide. He was looking forward to visiting Argentina for the upcoming World Cup games. He loved to see the world and traveled to Austria, England, Italy, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. He enjoyed the local attractions of the cities in which he lived and was a tremendous tour guide for visiting friends and family. He organized and participated in the annual pub crawl in Philadelphia for friends and coworkers. He was an aficionado of culinary delights and knew the best restaurant in any given neighborhood. He enjoyed reading everything from Plato to Pogo to John Sanford. His recent life's thrills were his extensive trip to Australia, his first time sky diving and his 50th High School reunion in Aurora. The highest priorities in Steve's life were his family, his children and his grandchildren. He never missed a birthday or special. Upon retirement, Steve relocated to Norwalk, Ohio to be closer to his grandchildren. He quickly became a cherished part of their daily lives.
