Wade Miller Davis

Wade Miller Davis, 93, of Abilene, Texas met his Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 15, 2012, in Abilene. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local hospice or animal shelter. Graceland/ Fairlawn Funeral Home is assisting the family with these arrangements. Online condolences and guest book may be signed at www.gracelandfairlawn.com. Wade was born in Bemidji, Minnesota on February 4, 1919, the son of James Tishomingo and Inez Lucile Woodruff Davis. He graduated from Bemidji State University with majors in English and Music Education and later completed his Master's Degree in guidance and counseling at Millikin University. He taught English and music in the Bemidji area and was later employed by the Army to teach music as part of the rehabilitation efforts for injured soldiers returning from WWII. In 1944, he married Charlene C. Carney and moved with her and their son, Lynn, first to Chrisman, Illinois and then to Bethany, Illinois in 1947. He taught English and music in the high school there until 1955 when the family moved to Decatur. He taught English first at the old Stephen Decatur High School and then at Eisenhower High School where he was also a guidance counselor until his retirement in 1982. Charlene passed away in 2007, and Wade and his son moved to Abilene, Texas on June 1st, 2011. Wade was a loving, supportive husband and father. He enjoyed teaching English and American literature and had excellent rapport with his students, counselees and fellow teachers. After retirement, he liked to spend time browsing at the library and enjoyed his family, friends, church, Sunday-school class discussions, good jazz music, playing his guitar along with Charlene's violin playing, puns (good and bad), philosophical ideas and discussions, golf and crossword puzzles. The family joined Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1992 and faithfully sang in the choir for a number of years. Wade is survived by his son Lynn of Abilene and a sister, Mrs. Willis Barry of Cortland. Ohio. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two brothers and one sister. His presence and sweet spirit will be greatly missed by his son and relatives, including Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cason of Abilene and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Carney of Lubbock, Texas. Our greatest comfort comes from knowing he is now safe with Christ. Until we meet again – Godspeed, Papa. Obituary written by family members.
