Samuel Wesley Sanner, 87, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, formerly of Mt. Zion, Illinois passed away in the Montereau Retirement Community in Tulsa on July 17, 2012.
He was born in Mt. Zion, Illinois on May 8, 1925, the youngest of the eight children that were born to Truman Quintus and Bernice Ann Jones Sanner. Sam was a 1943 graduate of Mt. Zion High School. He joined the U. S. Army during WWII and was driving a tank destroyer when he was severely wounded. He was presented with a Purple Heart and received an honorable discharge.
Sam graduated from the James Millikin University, Decatur, Illinois with a degree in music in 1949. He was well known in Decatur and Mt. Zion for his singing and piano playing. He then attended the University of Illinois and became a band director at schools in Galesburg, Illinois, in Texas and finally, in Tulsa where he directed the bands at the Central High School. He became an insurance agent with the Prudential Insurance Co. until his retirement.
Mr. Sanner married Marian Ruth Ohm of Edwardsville, Illinois on August 19, 1950. She was also a Millikin graduate. Sam was a very sweet and gentle man and greatly loved by his family and friends. His family is grateful for Father Denis and Lee and Evelyn Adler and the other residents at Montereau that made their retirement years very enjoyable.
Sam is survived by his son Gary of San Bernardino, California and one sister, Jewel Sanner Sims of Davis, California, two sisters-in-law Mildred Jenkins Sanner of Moweaqua and Audrey Owens Sanner of Decatur and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Marian Ruth Ohm Sanner.
