Marguerite Shuck McIlwain, 89, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at Sullivan Healthcare Center, with her children at her side.
Marguerite was born October 28, 1922, in Findlay, Illinois, to Burl and Bluebelle (Wright) Shuck. She graduated as salutatorian from Findlay High School and attended Millikin University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She graduated with honors from the University of Illinois and accepted a teaching position at Bethany High School. She married William Burr McIlwain, Sr. on December 15, 1946, in Findlay, Illinois. Marguerite and Bill resided in Bethany during their married life. After they started their family, she helped Bill with the production of the Bethany Echo and the Findlay Enterprise. She later completed her certification to teach elementary school, and became a third grade teacher at Bethany Elementary School until she retired. Marguerite had a special way with children and was well loved by her students.
Upon their retirement, Bill and Marguerite enjoyed listening and dancing to Big Band Music, traveling with friends, and spending winters in Florida. Nana and Mac enjoyed babysitting, and later watching the many athletic, musical, and other school events involving their grandchildren. They always enjoyed when their family gathered together. They celebrated 65 years of marriage in December 2011.
Marguerite was a member of the Bethany Methodist Church. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and playing cards, especially bridge.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of Sullivan Health Care Center and Lincoln Land Hospice Care for the excellent care that was given to Mom, and the compassion that was extended to her family.
Marguerite is survived by her daughters, Cynthia, and husband, Joe Petty, of Mt. Zion, IL, Margaret Jarc of Palos Verdes, CA, and son, Bill, and wife, Cindy, of Windsor, IL. Her grandchildren include Julie, and husband, Bill Nord, of South Elgin, IL, David Petty of Mt. Zion, IL, Chris Petty, and fiancée Sara Holycross, of Marietta, GA, and Jake and Jared McIlwain, of Windsor, IL. Great grandchildren include Ryan, Kyle, Audrey, and Grace Nord, and Children and David Petty, Jr.
Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband Bill on December 15, 2012, her parents, a special aunt, Marie Shuck, and granddaughter, Elizabeth McIlwain.
