Lauri Pilling, 84, Decatur, passed away peacefully early Monday morning, July 9, 2012. Lauri was born Feb. 25, 1928 in Portland, Oregon. She moved to Long Beach, California (1939) where she met the love of her life, Bud (1946). They were married Nov. 11, 1950 and moved to Decatur, Illinois in 1957.
Decatur was the first of many of the places they lived and loved. They raised four children; made many, lifelong friends and were thrilled to return to Decatur in their later years. They are affiliated with Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church, Joel Stevenor pastor.
Lauri graduated from Long Beach Jr. College with an associate degree in journalism and worked at Long Beach Press Telegram before marriage. After marrying Bud, Lauri was a devoted wife, mother and volunteer. She was active in Junior Welfare, P.E.O (5 different chapters) and volunteered at St. Mary's Hospital and her children's schools. She loved entertaining and welcomed all people into her home, from young friends of her family to her husband's colleagues to foreign exchange students.
She also had a heart for animals and children, doing whatever she could to help them. Her love of animals included providing a home for many dogs, slightly fewer cats and even a rabbit. She explored the world, and was always ready to follow Bud on any trip, whether on land or sea.
Lauri was a loving & generous person that made everyone she met feel special. Although she is no longer physically with us, she will always live on in our memories.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Bud Pilling; daughter, Sue (Bob Walker) Pilling-Walker, of Decatur; son, Steve (Marta) Pilling of Murietta, CA; niece, Sherri (Glenn) Heintschel of Fayetteville, Texas; grandsons, Adam (Sarah) Hershfelt of Fraser, CO and Greg (Jenarae Coleman) Melikian of Denver Colorado; granddaughter, Alison (Freddie Washington) Hershfelt of Denver; step-granddaughter, Tammy (Jeff) Campbell of Safford, Arizona; step-grandson Ben (Kristen Grady) Rogers of Murietta, California; and 3 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Laura & Ben Riesland; sister Marjorie Short; and two daughters, Terry Lynn Pilling and Judy Pilling.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Judy Pilling Memorial Foundation, in care of the Community Foundation of Decatur and Macon County.
