St. Charles, Ill.
Frances L. Schumm, 89, recently of St. Charles, passed away on July 30, 2012. She was born in Decatur, Ill., on May 14, 1923, to Percy Gordon and Marguerite (nee Cline) Picknell.
After graduating from Millikin University in Decatur with a bachelor's in music, she went on to receive a master of arts in music education, from Columbia Teachers College in New York, in 1946. She taught in the Kankakee Public Schools; then became a vocal teacher at Southeastern Louisiana College (now University) in Hammond, La., and later at George Peabody College (now part of Vanderbilt University) in Nashville, Tenn. From 1966 to 1975, she taught music at the Dixon, Ill. Public Schools. She married Robert William Schumm (the Reverend) on Aug. 27, 1950. For 53 years, until Robert's death in 2003, they shared a joyous life together, raising four children and serving in church congregations. As a widow, she continued to be active in family, church, and community life.
rances is survived by her son, Gilbert C. (Peggy) Schumm; daughter, Greta (James) McDonald, and stepdaughters, Karel Thompson and Charlotte Griffin; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
