Steven Paul Pilling, Murrieta, California, passed away at his home September 24, 2012.
Steve was born July 23, 1958 in Decatur, Ill. He attended Southeast and Muffley Elementary Schools and Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Decatur, and then went to high school at Campion in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin and Gilmour Academy in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Millikin University, Decatur, Illinois, in 1981. While at Millikin he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity; captain of the swim team; and Homecoming King. After graduation he moved to San Diego, California. He earned a MBA at National University, and was CEO of his own company, Telecom Consultants for 17 years. His second career was teaching emotionally disturbed high school boys at Oak Grove Center after earning a degree in special education. Steve was a founding team member and lead teacher of the NASA Explorer school program, and enjoyed preparing his students for robotics competitions, where they consistently placed high in area competitions.
Steve was Co-President of H.E.A.R.T. for children in Temecula. He served on the Board of Trustees for the Pilling foundation in Decatur, IL. He was a wish granter for the Make-A-Wish foundation in San Diego for 17 years. He began swimming competitively at a young age, continued through high school, college and into his adult years. He also was an avid tennis player, playing frequently with his friends on his red clay tennis court.
Steve married his soul mate, Marta Hoole Rogers April 16, 1994 in Murrieta. They enjoyed tennis, traveling, and horse racing. Steve was a good man and he will be missed.
He is survived by his wife; father, Bud Pilling (of Decatur, IL); mother-in-law, Margaret Hoole (of Murrieta); sister, Sue (Bob Walker of Decatur, IL); daughter Tammy (Jeff Campbell of Safford, AZ), son Ben Rogers (Kristen Grady of Murrieta), grandchildren Jayson Campbell, Talena Campbell, and Brooklyn Rogers; brothers-in-law (all of Murrieta), Bill Hoole (Lynn), Tim Hoole (Kitty), Shannon Hoole (Michelle), cousin Sherri (Glenn Heinstchel of Fayetteville, TX), and many nieces and nephews.
Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Lauri Pilling; his father-in-law, Bob Hoole; and two sisters, Terry Lynn Pilling and Judy Louise Pilling.
