Samuel Goody Gardner '54, 83, of Danville, formerly of Decatur, passed away at 8:05 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2011, at VA Illiana Healthcare System, Danville.
He was born January 31, 1928 in Terre Haute, IN., the son of George A. and Mary Alice Graham Gardner. He married Rosemary Grace in 1949; they later divorced.
He is survived by a son, Lynn (Terri) Gardner of Charleston, IL, 2 daughters, Debbie (Tucker) Kelly of Champaign and Lori McCombs of Peoria, 4 grandchildren, Cody (Kelly) Gardner , Lyndsey (Marie) Santos, Janni Rose (Michael) Whitley and Ella McCombs and 2 great-grandchildren, Christopher and Kaden Whitley. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosie in 1982 and son Kevin Gardner in 1990.
Sam was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving as a sonar operator on the U.S.S. McCafferey. He received his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Millikin University in 1954. Sam loved golf, 3 cushion billiards and music, especially the blues. Most of all, though, he loved his children and grandchildren.
Sam’s family would like to thank the staff at the VA Community Living Center for the respect, compassion, and friendship that they showed him while he resided with them.
