Janet Eileen Gneckow Thompson went to be with her Lord and Savior on Jan. 12, 2013. She was the first of two children born to Gerald and Thelma Garver in Decatur, IL on May 3, 1934.
She met Donald Wayne Gneckow (ALUM59) at Millikin University and they married Sept. 6, 1953. She was a devoted wife, homemaker and mother to her three children while Don served in the Navy during the Korean War. They moved to Canoga Park, CA in 1962 where they lived until Don's death in 1994.
She found love again and married Warren Thompson in 2003. They enjoyed traveling all over the world as well as frequent visits to both sets of children until she lost her hard-fought 11 year battle with multiple myeloma. He was a wonderful support to her during those years.
She loved nothing better than having all her family together. She also loved walks on the beach, beautiful sunsets, eating, and of course, shopping. But she also surprised everyone by parasailing, horseback riding, inner tubing, and white water rafting during her last 11 years.
Janet is survived by her husband Warren Thompson, her brother Don Garver (Brenda), her children Cindi Salazar (Larry), Doug Gneckow (Debi), Rod Gneckow (Ruthy), and Steve Gneckow (Cheryl). Her grandchildren: Brianna, Benjamin, and Carrie Gneckow, and Cayla Salazar. Her step-grandchildren: Dawn Zitterow Kalapp, Trevor Zitterow (Stacey); Eric Johnson (Tanya), Jennifer Johnson; Vanessa, Paola and Nicole Moreno; and numerous great-grandchildren. She also was loved by Warrren's three children, Scott (Elisabeth), Brett, and Kerry. Scott's children are Trevor, Scott, and Nate.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years Don, her parents, grandson Shawn Gneckow, and step-grandson Buddy Kalapp.
