Shallenberger on June 8, 1944 and followed him to Longview, Texas where he was stationed with the U.S. Army Medical Corps. In Texas, Virginia found work with the U.S. Public Health Service as a technician at the Malaria Research Lab in the hospital.
Virginia and Martin returned to Illinois after the war, living in Lockport and Joliet for a number of years before moving to Lombard in 1961. While raising their family, Martin was employed by Standard Oil Company while Virginia took care of the home and children. Later, Virginia worked for 18 years as an Audio-Vision Technician testing children in schools throughout DuPage County.
Virginia always enjoyed life, loved animals and appreciated the natural beauty around her. She liked to travel, play the piano, sing old songs, read poetry and be with her family.
