Times-Picayune (New Orleans, La.)

The Honorable J. Robert Hoepffner passed away september 12, 2005, from heart failure at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, Tn., at the age of 75 following Hurricane Katrina. He had been evacuated from East Jefferson Hospital in Metairie, La., and was flown by private plane with a nurse to Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, Tn.

He was born in st. Louis, Mo., to Joseph Charles and Lilyan Sill Hoepffner. He received his undergraduate degree at Milikin University in Decatur, Ill. where he served as the president of his student body class, his senior class, and T.K.E. fraternity.

He served in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean War until 1954. He graduated from Tulane Law School and went to become a practicing attorney for 30 years. He served as assistant district attorney for Jefferson Parish and was appointed judge of Division A First Parish Court by the Supreme Court of Louisiana. He was judge and ad hoc judge for various courts for seven years in Jefferson Parish. Once he retired, he served as hearing officer in the support division of the juvenile court for the Parish of Jefferson.

He was an accomplished pianist and played many conventions, New Orleans and Metairie country clubs and hotels. He also played many Mardi Gras balls with the Rene Louapre Society Orchestra.

He is survived by his beloved wife June Dragon Hoepffner, his daughter Michelle H. Pearson and three grandchildren.
