John Scott Hindahl, 85, of Bloomington passed away at 10:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at Advocate Bromenn Medical Center, Normal.

John Scott Hindahl was born August 26, 1926, to Zelma (Scott) and Walter Hindahl on their farm in San Jose, Illinois. After being raised on the farm with brothers Walt, Joe and Dick, he graduated from San Jose High School, and entered the United States Navy in the V-12 civil engineering program of officer training. During this training, he attended college in Missouri and Michigan.

After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946, he attended Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, graduating with a bachelor's degree in business. Upon graduation, he started his 39 year career in the State Farm Life department while continuing his educational training as a life underwriter. He obtained certifications as a life insurance underwriter (CLU and FMLI).

On June 5, 1949 John married the love of his life, Mary Ann Lessen of Hartsburg, Illinois. Through time, a son Michael Scott, then a daughter Patricia Ann, and lastly a son David Scott were added to the family. There were job related moves to Berkley, California, Birmingham, Alabama, and in 1957, Salem, Oregon to manage the Northwest region of the Life Dept. In 1973, he returned to Normal and spent the next 16 years as Vice President of Underwriting for the Life and Health departments and retired in 1989.

After retirement, Mary and John split their time between Normal and New Smyrna Beach, Florida pursuing their avid interests in golf and world travel. He also loved to visit the Pacific Northwest to see his grandchildren and fish for steelhead and salmon.

John was preceded in death by his son Michael. He is survived by his wife Mary, daughter Trish Dale Kruse of Normal, Illinois, son Dave Robin Hindahl of White Salmon, Washington, grandchildren John and Mike Kruse, Aurora and Liam Hindahl. Also surviving are brother Walter Hindahl of Petersburg, Indiana, and daughter in law Peggy Price of Estacada, Oregon.

Memorials can be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Home Sweet Home Mission of Bloomington, Illinois. His greatest passions in life were is church and his family. John's family humbly extends their gratitude to Drs Klauss and Widerborg and the associates of Advocate Bromenn for their courage, compassion and professionalism. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
