Coach's Corner

Final exams are “in the books”, holiday gifts delivered, and the first conference game of the 2006-07 is over….and Millikin survived all!!

As a coach/leader, managing this time of year is very exciting and challenging.  There are no classes and few responsibilities for the team.  Although this may seem like a coach’s dream (more time for practice, film, lifting, etc.), I find that keeping the student-athletes focused, motivated, and developing as a unit is important.

In addition to the basketball activities, I have asked guests, individuals that I believe are “difference makers” to visit with the women’s basketball team.  I asked the speakers to challenge the team and to inspire them to envision the possibilities in their future, and the ways in which they can leave their imprint in this world.  This week we were joined by two leaders:  Rich Dunsworth, Vice-President for Enrollment at Millikin, and Kevin Breheny, President of JL Hubbard in Decatur and also a member of the Millikin University Board of Trustees.

Vice-President Dunsworth, considered by many to be an expert in team-building and college-age students, challenged the women’s basketball team to plan to live a personal life of meaning and value.

Kevin Breheny introduced the team to a book, The Traveler’s Gift by Andy Andrews that presented the “seven decisions”.   These decisions based on real-life stories, are great beacons of light shining the way to a successful future.

  • The buck stops here.

Adversity is preparation for greatness.

  • I will seek wisdom.

I will choose my friends with care.

  • I am a person of action.

I can make a decision and I can make it now.

  • I have a decided heart.

My destiny is assured.

  • Today I will choose to be happy.

I am the possessor of a grateful heart.

  • I will greet this day with a forgiving spirit.

I will forgive myself.

  • I will persist without exception.

I will find a way where there is no way.
