Athletic Training at Millikin University A Day in the Life...
Athletic training students (ATS)
are being educated and trained to be qualified allied health care professional
that are experienced in the prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation, protection,
and management of health care problems associated with sports participation. To
ensure an optimal education , the students are required to fulfill academic and
clinical requirements to maintain their status within the program.

Once admitted to the program, the
ATS must maintain a 2.5/ 4.0 overall GPA and a 3.0/4.0 major GPA. The
student experiences coursework in Exercise Science and Sport, Biology,
Chemistry, Nursing and Psychology. Along with the full time academic load,
the student also must fulfill the clinical portion of the profession as well.
The clinical portion consists of obtaining a
minimum of 800 hours of work within the athletic training room, at practices,
and at competitions.
Under the supervision of a certified athletic
trainer, students perform injury evaluations, rehabilitate athletic injuries,
perform emergency health care, and teach prevention techniques to the athletic
population.

Athletic training students travel
with the athletic teams during away competitions. When students are sent
with sports teams to away competitions, it is their duty to perform only as
first responders by doing routine athletic training tasks and to complete basic
evaluations of acute injuries in consultation with the host school's certified
athletic trainer. The ATS is responsible for contacting professors of his/her
absence in class and for making up any missed work.
