Social Science-Secondary Teaching Major


To teach social science (psychology or sociology) in middle or high schools, students must complete a liberal arts history major of at least 33 credits:

  • 9hrs of American History 
  • 3hrs of History Seminar
  • 3hrs of Historiography
  • 12hrs of History electives (300+ level)

In addition to the above history courses, social sciences majors must complete 18hrs in the following courses:

  • PO100 American Political System
  • EC 100 Principles of Macroeconomics
  • SO100 Introduction to Sociology
  • PS130 Introduction to Psychology
  • HI110  Cultural Geography
  • SO120 Introduction to Anthropology

In addition, the following courses are recommended for the social sciences major:

  • PS110 20th Century Political Systems
  • EC110 Microeconomics
  • PS310 Principles of Psychopathology
  • PS204 Social Psychology
  • PS318 Personality Theory 

Upon completion of the degree requirements, teachers will be certified in Illinois to teach:

  • American History
  • Political Science
  • World History
  • Psychology
  • Economics
  • Sociology
  • Social Science (see the Middle School Grades endorsement requirements).

Students completing a major in another teaching field may add a second teaching field in social sciences by completing at least 24 credits in social science courses. Interested students should contact the Education Department for state required courses and Millikin suggested courses.
