Career Planning Timeline
Outlined below are the general steps most Millikin students will take toward their career of choice.
FIRST YEAR: Check out major and career possibilities
- Meet with a career counselor to discuss career goals
- Complete assessments to evaluate your values, interests, personality, and skills
- Explore majors and careers that are a “good fit” with your values, interests, personality, and skills
- Get a log-on for the eDiscover career exploration system from the CEEC
SECOND YEAR: Find ways to get career-related experience
- Keep working to develop and clarify your career goals
- Start building your resume through part-time jobs and campus/community involvement
- Seek part-time or summer jobs related to your career goals
- Find out about internships in your field
THIRD YEAR: Keep gaining experience & learn how to market it
- Attend a resume-writing workshop or meet with a Career Specialist in the Career & Experiential Education Center
- Complete an internship – employers seek students with real-world experience
- Research graduate programs and decide if this is the right choice for you
- Practice interviewing by completing a mock interview
FOURTH YEAR: Decide where and how to market yourself
- Apply to graduate schools and take appropriate qualifying exams (GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, etc…)
- Fine-tune your resume
- Attend job search and interviewing workshops offered by the CEEC
- Focus your job search - Identify the geographic area where you want to work, and the positions for which you want to search
- Use on-campus recruiting services in addition to conducting your own job search – don’t forget that the CEEC has several resources to help you
