The Millikin University Service Learning Scholars Program provides an opportunity for students to become leaders in campus and community service, and to assist in coordinated efforts to involve other students in such activities. Two $2,000 Service Learning Scholarships are awarded annually to incoming freshmen. This scholarship is over and above the Millikin Financial Aid Award and is renewable annually for four years.

Service Learning Scholars Responsibilities and Expectations
- Participate in at least five hours of service-learning activities per week. This may include direct service or indirect service.
- Participate in regular Service Learning Scholar team meetings.
- Serve as a resource for Freshman Seminar students involved in service learning experiences, and as a liaison between community partners and the Career & Experiential Education Center
- Actively engage in promoting community and civic engagement opportunities and events to the campus community
- Promote individual service sites/projects to the campus community
- As a group, promote and participate in at least two service or civic engagement events per semester
- Participate in any voter registration drives or other activities/events related to local/state/federal elections
- Enroll in one credit of IN230 or IN330 each semester to earn off-campus learning credit
- Attend Leadership Development programs sponsored by the Office of Student Programs
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75
- Submit documented service activities on a monthly basis
Leadership Role
Millikin University Service Learning Scholars involve themselves and others in community service. Working through the Career & Experiential Education Center, they provide structure and support for co-curricular service learning and volunteer service at Millikin. Service Learning Scholars become campus and community leaders.
Selection Criteria
- Admission to Millikin University as a full-time student
- Demonstration of active participation and leadership in previous service activities
- Exemplary academic achievement that includes one or more of the following:
cumulative GPA of at least 2.75/4.0, top 20% of high school class, composite ACT of at least 20
- Participate in an interview with current Service Learning Scholar
The selection committee consists of current Service Learning Scholars, the Director of the CEEC, and at least one faculty member. Finalists will be invited to campus for an interview. Scholarship recipients will be determined through the interview process.
Application Information
In order to be considered for a Service Learning Scholarship, students must submit the application packet by Friday, February 29, 2008. Application packet includes: application, essay, and resume. Finalists will be notified by March 17, 2007 with an invitation for an interview on-campus during the month of April.
