Career Planning Timeline

Outlined below are the general steps most students take toward their career of choice.

FIRST YEAR: Check out major and career possibilities

  1. Meet with a career counselor to discuss career goals
  2. Complete assessments to evaluate your values, interests, personality, and skills
  3. Explore majors and careers that are a “good fit” with your values, interests, personality, and skills
  4. Get a log-on for the eDiscover career exploration system from the CEEC


SECOND YEAR: Find ways to get career-related experience

  1. Keep working to develop and clarify your career goals
  2. Start building your resume through part-time jobs and campus/community involvement
  3. Seek part-time or summer jobs related to your career goals
  4. Find out about internships in your field


THIRD YEAR: Keep gaining experience & learn how to market it

  1. Attend a resume-writing workshop or meet with a Career Specialist in the Career & Experiential Education Center
  2. Complete an internship – employers seek students with real-world experience
  3. Research graduate programs and decide if this is the right choice for you
  4. Practice interviewing by completing a mock interview


FOURTH YEAR: Decide where and how to market yourself

  1. Apply to graduate schools and take appropriate qualifying exams
  2. Fine-tune your resume
  3. Attend job search and interviewing workshops offered by the CEEC
  4. Focus your job search - Identify the geographic area where you want to work, and the positions for which you want to search
  5. Use on-campus recruiting services in addition to conducting your own job search – don’t forget that the CEEC has several resources to help you
