Advising > Chemistry Major, Teaching Emphasis

The education emphasis is for majors who want to teach at the secondary level. We recognize that teachers must be generalists and so we recommend courses that reflect this generalism. We expect that education majors will be active in the department as tutors and lab assistants. Their research should be in science education. Click here for a Teaching Emphasis Advising Form. (PDF)

Core Requirements
We require 24 hours of core courses:

Chemistry 251, 253: Intermediate Chemistry Laboratory I, III

Teaching Emphasis Requirements
Students interested in teaching high school should take the secondary education emphasis.

Core Requirements As Above
Additional courses in science to be prepared for passing the state content exam in science. The test includes earth science, astronomy, biology, and physics along with chemistry.
If you want to teach high school science, you must meet all the requirements in education including internship hours and successful passing of state exams.

Before you can be admitted to teacher ed, you must pass the Basic Skills Test.
Before student teaching, you must have 100 clock hours of internship in school classrooms, pass the Content Area Exam and have a minimum 2.7 GPA overall and no grade lower than C in chemistry courses.
Before program completion, you must pass the APT test (Assessment of Professional Teaching).
To teach science at the Middle School Level, ED 440(2cr) and ED 450(2cr) must be completed in addition to the courses above. This can be done in the fall of the senior year.
We encourage chemistry education students to serve as lab assistants, peer tutors, and SI instructors.
A mininum grade of C in IN 150 and IN 151 is required for admission to teacher education.
