Department of Communication

Thank you for your interest in Communication at Millikin University!

Communication is about the construction of meaning between people and their various audiences: friends, parents, romantic partners, bosses, communities and more.  The study of communication focus on understanding the symbols and the processes that construct those meanings. The relationship of those symbols to the people who use them is examined, as well as the pragmatic and ethical principles that guide people's communicative choices.

The Communication Department applies this learning to students’ personal and professional lives. Classroom learning, research projects and practical application in service-learning, internship projects, and media lab activities help make these abstract ideas come alive. The Communication Department's goal is to enable students to become effective problem-solvers, critics, and practitioners in their personal and professional communities.

Students interested in the communication major may choose one of three tracks in the major or select from a variety of electives to create a concentration that best prepares them for their personal and career objectives.  We offer tracks in: Public Relations, Mass Media/Journalism, and Organizational Communication.  All students are required to complete a senior internship in their area of professional concentration.
