Millikin University hosts a number of speakers on a weekly basis, but rarely are these events actually over-attended. However, on Wednesday, Oct. 20, hundreds of Millikin students and members of the Decatur community filed out of the previously designated facility, Pilling Chapel, to Lower Richards Treat University Center (LRTUC), in order to adequately and comfortably seat everyone.

“I think this is the largest group I’ve ever spoken in front of before,” said guest speaker David Kaczynski, a national leader in anti-death penalty activism and brother of Unabomber Theodore (Ted) Kaczynski.

Local businesses disappear

Hungry’s Gyros. Del’s Popcorn Shop. The Red Couch. Georgie’s. The Blue Phoenix.

These are names of businesses that were at one time located in the Oakwood area of Decatur’s west end. Each one of these businesses had only a short run in the area near Millikin’s campus.

These “disappearances” have caused a lot of speculation among students and members of the community about the possibility of Decatur as a bad location for commerce. However, current business owners disagree.

Obama stops in Dectaur

Illinois State Senator Barack Obama’s campaign tour stopped on Saturday, October 9th, at the Shilling Community Education center at Decatur’s Richland Community College.

Obama entered the conference room to an enthusiastic standing ovation from an audience comprised of young blacks, elderly whites, and everyone in between. Democratic Candidate for State’s Attorney Jack Ahola introduced him to the podium. Obama smiled widely as he joked, “A year and a half ago, you didn’t even know who I was!”
