Millikin Women win NCAA DIII National Championship

Back in late November, when the Millikin women’s basketball team set foot onto the hardwood for the first time this season, none of them could have imagined where they would end up in March. A national championship is something that is often only dreamed of, but on Saturday, March 19, the Big Blue ladies made that dream a reality.

“Winning the national championship is what we have all dreamed about and what we wanted our seniors to go out with. They set the standard for what wearing blue means,” junior Lindsey Koehn said.

“It’s like living a dream. It’s one of those moments that you dream about when you are a little girl and somehow, all the sudden, you’re living it,” senior Audrey Minott added.

Pitching staff guides team in season

When asking the Big Blue baseball team what was key to the season everyone said “pitching”. Over the past few weeks the pitching has been solid and provided hope for winning the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW).

“We’ll go as far as our pitching will take us this year and with the pitchers we have that can be a long ways,” senior Matt Wyatt acknowledged.

The Big Blue traveled to Hannibal, MO to take on Hannibal-LaGrange on March 15. The Big Blue dropped the first game 5-2 before pulling out a win in the second game. Lambert hit his second homerun of year in the third inning of the first game. Junior Dave Merten started for Millikin giving up four runs in five innings while striking out three. Schuit came in for relief and pitched a perfect sixth inning.

Injuries slow season for softball team

Millikin’s softball team has not had an easy early-season thus far. Currently the Big Blue’s record is 6-6, going 6-4 on their annual trip to the Rebel Springs Games in Kissimmee, Florida. The squad has suffered some early setbacks, and currently has several players on the sidelines due to injuries.

“The injuries have pulled the team together, they are taking care of one another,” head coach Jim Mills said.

“I think the team can bounce back from the injuries that have already occured. We have a lot of tough and versatile players that help each other out,” senior shortstop Molly Householder said.
