Core Goal 1. Students will understand literary traditions of diverse peoples and cultures, particularly British and American.

Core Goal 2. Students will produce near-professional writing within their major concentration.

Core Goal 3. Students will demonstrate computer-aided design, editing, and publishing skills.

Core Goal 4. Students will understand the intertextuality of all writing as a product of its cultural time and place and as a contributor to its historical moment.

Writing Major Core Learning Goals

Writing Major Goal 1. Writing major students will know classical and contemporary rhetorics and epistemologies governing various writing theories.

Writing Major Goal 2. Writing major students will apply knowledge about writing theories and pedagogies to their own writing processes.

Writing Major Goal 3. Writing major students will synthesize a variety of writing theories to produce original writing theory scholarship.

Writing Major Goal 4. Writing major students will be able to contemplate, reflect on and critique their own writing processes and artifacts.

Writing Major Goal 5. Writing major students will synthesize knowledge specific to their writing concentration and develop a personal theory of writing or poetics.

All Writing Majors are required to complete a concentration of Advanced Writing Studies in either (1) Creative Writing, (2) Journalism, or (3) Professional Writing.

 

Creative Writing Concentration Learning Goals

Creative Writing Goal 1. Students will know the form and structure of a variety of literary genres, including poetry, fiction, non-fiction and scriptwriting.

Creative Writing Goal 2. Students will understand contemporary writers’ aesthetic responses to the tradition as well as student contributions to those traditions.

Creative Writing Goal 3. Students will be able to actively participate in and contribute to the creation of publishable or near professional texts.

English Education Goal 1. English education students will have advanced understanding of a variety of literary genres, including an understanding of literatures’ historical, intellectual, and cultural contexts.

English Education Goal 2. English education students will understand the cultural and literary traditions of diverse peoples from the United States in the last 100 years (American literature).

English Education Goal 3. English education students will know classical and contemporary rhetorics and epistemologies governing various writing theories.

English Education Goal 4. English education students will apply a variety of writing theories to plans and scholarship on the teaching of writing (theory and practice of teaching writing).

English Education Goal 5. English education students will becoming familiar with best practices in the methods of teaching the English language arts and formulate their own teaching methodologies in the field (language arts teaching methods).
