2007 Events:
Dec. 2 – Reading Between the Lines: The Story Behind the Block Documents, a presentation by Dr. Dan Guillory on Dec. 2, 2007 at 2PM, Rock Springs, Macon County Conservation District.
Please join Dr. Dan Guillory as he tells the story behind the presidential cartoons, memoirs, letters, and notes collected by the Block family over a period of 60 years. The Block Documents cover about 100 years of American history, but the bulk of them are concerned with the Civil War period and the career of Abraham Lincoln. The most notable items are the controversial Currier and Ives political cartoons dealing with the 1860 presidential campaign. The exhibition provides a rare opportunity to inspect letters and papers that literally made American history. Dr. Guillory has spoken about the Block Documents at the McClean County Historical Society Museum in Bloomington and at the Oak Park Historical Society. The exhibition is sponsored by the Macon County Conservation District, the Illinois State Historical Society, and the Illinois Humanities Council.
 Nov. 10 - Lincoln and Lindsay, A Presentation by Dr. Dan Guillory

Dr. Dan Guillory spoke on the theme of Lincoln as inspiration for Springfield’s most famous poet. His presentation included a reading of “Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight,” as well as a Lindsay-related poem from his new book, “Ice Cream at the Smiths,” which is set in the Smith-Lindsay House. The talk was part of the annual Vachel Lindsay birthday celebration. Dr. Guillory is Professor Emeritus of English at Millikin University. He is the author of six books, including Living With Lincoln. His seventh book, The Lincoln Poems, will appear in 2008.
May 27 - The Lincoln Poems, A poetry reading presented by Dan Guillory at the Rock Springs Nature Center on Sunday May 27, 2007, at 2PM.
Have you ever wondered if Lincoln appreciated the spring flowers blooming on the prairie or the long golden sunsets in the evening? These poems will offer you an opportunity to hear Lincoln’s voice as he expresses his deepest feelings and longings, including poems about the Illinois frontier, Lincoln’s family, slavery, and the Civil War. Many of these poems have been published in Illinois Times newspaper in Springfield, and some have been performed at various poetry readings. Dan Guillory has won awards from the Academy of American Poets and the Illinois Arts Council, for which he served as a Poet in the Schools. He is the author of The Alligator Inventions, a book of poems about Cajun Louisiana.
 Dr. Gulliory's Arcadia Press book will be Images of Macon County, was published in January 2007.
February 11 - Macon County Remembered: A Presentation by Dr. Dan Guillory, 2:00 PM, Sunday at Madden Auditorium in the Decatur Public Library.
This presentation will focus on the patterns of social bonding and community-building that helped to create Macon County as we know it today, an area of nearly 600 square miles with 15 towns and villages. Dr. Guillory will discuss the following important themes: (1) families, especially as shown in family reunions and “multigenerational” family portraits; (2) church congregations, with special attention to the Methodists and the Cumberland Presbyterians; (3) clubs and athletic teams, including book groups, garden clubs, YWCA and YMCA teams, high school football teams, and groups like the Masons and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows; (4) railroads and depots, especially after 1854 when the Great Western (Wabash) R. R. arrived from the west and the Illinois Central from the North, creating the basic infrastructure of the county; (5) the symbiosis that existed between the county seat of Decatur and the important communities of Maroa and Warrensburg, each of which boasted an opera house at the turn of the century.
This presentation will be based on Dr. Guillory’s newest book, Macon County, which is scheduled for release by Arcadia Publishing on January 29, 2007. Dr. Guillory is the author of five previous books, including Living With Lincoln: Life and Art in the Heartland and Images of America: Decatur. Signed copies of Macon County will be available after the presentation.

May 10 - The City of Decatur’s Historical and Architectural Sites Commission presented its Education Award for 2006 to Dr. Dan Guillory, Professor Emeritus, Millikin University “for the preservation of historical and architectural heritage.”
March 15 - Dr. Guillory's new book Wartime Decatur 1932-1945 was published.

April 18 - "Living with Lincoln" reading at the Pawnee Public Library in Pawnee, Illinois (7pm)
Using the life of Abraham Lincoln as a focal point, Dan Guillory will read selections from his many published books, essays, and poems, painting a verbal portrait of the life and culture of Central Illinois, including such topics as chili parlors, cats, snow, floods, gardening, old cars, and country houses.
