English Faculty Forum
Centering Participation
and Contribution
in Teacher/Learner Relationships
a presentation by
Dr. Nancy DeJoy
Director of CWRR
Thursday

This
presentation focused on redefining student subjectivity
as participating in and contributing to knowledge
building. After a brief summary of the ways that education
has traditionally constructed students as consumers
of knowledge whose main job is to adapt to the way
things are, Dr. DeJoy turned to an in-depth discussion
of some of the ways we can challenge that traditional
construction of learners. Using writing instruction
as her case study, Dr. DeJoy showed how it becomes
possible for teachers and learners to work together
toward less consumer-based models for education.
Dr.
DeJoy is Associate Professor of English at Millikin
University. She is the author of a number of articles
that explore the ways that teaching, learning, and
faculty development can engage classroom practices,
collaborative enterprises, community-based learning,
and intellectual paradigms that open spaces for participation
and contribution to all members of the writing classes.
Her book, Process This: Undergraduate Student Writing
IN Composition Studies is currently under review.
