Amanda
Lee Bodine
Bio: Self-afflicting; often annoyed; obsessive-compulsive
about the weirdest things; will ramble on about obscure
situations in hypothetical universes.
Plans: In the spring of 2006 I plan to attend the University
of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in the graduate program
for art history.
Favorite English classes or English activities: Frech's
Advanced Creative Writing courses, editing Collage
, and writing that one article for the Decaturian
.
Favorite authors: (in alphabetical order because I'm compulsive):
Don DeLillo, Joyce Carol Oates, George Orwell, Ayn Rand,
and Kurt Vonnegut
I like to write poetry mostly but I will occasionally
write short shorts, and anything that involves me going
on a rant.
Advice for future English majors: Be as involved as possible
in whatever you are doing--it makes your undergraduate
program so much more worthwhile.

English
writing/Spanish major. I enjoy running, really bad Spanish
pop music, tofu, and live music. All at once!
I
will be living in Chicago with my friend Lily for the
summer. My future will ideally involve travel, community
service, and graduate school.
What
did you like best about English studies at Millikin? I
really liked writing theory and British authors II. Sigma
Tau Delta is a great social and academic organization
for English folk--the group is full of spunk and energy.
Who
are your favorite authors? Virginia Woolf, Emily Bronte,
Elizabeth Bishop, Toni Morrison . . . lots and lots.
What
is your advice for future English majors? Write for yourself,
as well as for your classes.

Brief
Bio: Restless postmodernist, world-class writer's block
participant, extra-dimensional entity, cool guy.
Plans:
I'll probably get some sort of editing/publishing job
to pay the bills (and they are numerous), hopefully will
end up as a writer in some sort of entertainment industry.
Favorite
English studies at Millikin: Writing Roundtable with Dr
Shepherd, Senior Portfolio, Decaturian, Web Publishing,
being in the Mac Lab till 4am trying to get Dreamweaver
to do my stupid rollovers... (ok, so not so much the last
one).
Favorite
Authors: Kurt Vonnegut, Sherman Alexie, Andrew Schwab,
Mark Salomon, Ayn Rand, HP Lovecraft, Chuck Palahniuk,
Paul Auster, Henry Rollins
I
like to write strings
of words that have vague relation to one another, protesting
madly against the phrase "stream of consciousness".
also, short stories.
Advice
for English majors: Shakespeare isn't the only person who
has written in English. Moreover, he isn't the best. Read
someone you've never heard of. Then, after you've done that,
find someone else.

Don
Houy
I
hail from the small northwestern city of Galena, Illinois
with my brother and parents. My life is quite simple
in plot, but complex in specifics, so I will spare you
the rest. My senior year sparked my interest in law, but
my departure has me going in the opposite direction: theology.
I hear my calling lies in studying the cosmic mysteries
of the universe. My passion lies in studying the
Bible and growing closer to God's character and heart,
not the law. My destination seems to be headed toward
professorship or theologian, but whatever it is, I thank
Millikin for being the beginning of my journey.
favorite authors: Toni Morrison, Chinua Achebe, and a
vast array of all literatures
advice: Don't be afraid to take Mihm's classes.
Just because they will be mentally intense, demanding
classes you will learn a lot and be better students for
the experience.

I
was born and raised in Decatur, Illinois, but my heart
resides in Mythology and Fantasy Literature. I have always
been a daydreamer, a stargazer, a little shy, and more
than a little odd. I love anything to do with the outdoors;
that feeling of pure life that comes from a separation
with civilization is inspiring.
I
credit my parents with my obsession with books, and Millikin
with a way to look productive while reading them. Anyhow,
I couldn't have become what I am today without the wonderful
people who care about me.
In
the next year I plan to play the professional field; picking
up a job or two and seeing how I feel. I want to see what
possibilities lay before me before I commit myself to
something expensive and time consuming like graduate school.
Of course, I'm not writing that off as a possibility for
2006 either. Other than that, I plan to keep writing and
having fun being a nerd.
What
did you like best about English studies at Millikin?
I absolutely loved the Writing Roundtable seminars with
Dr. Brooks. What a great opportunity to grow as a writer!
Other favorites include Dr. George's Tolkien & Global
Fantasy Lit, Dr. O'Connor's Web Publishing, Dr. Meddaugh's
Newswriting I, Prof. Dwiggins' Children's Literature,
and Dr. Brooks' Classical Traditions.
Who
are your favorite authors? J.R.R. Tolkien, Piers Anthony,
Mercedes Lackey, Rumiko Takahashi, J.K. Rowling, Lucy
Maud Montgomery, Michael Crichton, Hans Christian Andersen,
the Grimm brothers, and Jane Austen to name a few.
I
like to spend my free time writing Fantasy and Children's
literature.
What
is your advice for future English majors? Get involved.
It's the only way to feel involved.

What
are your plans for the next year and the future? I will
be teaching British Literature at Springfield High School
in Springfield, IL.
What
did you like best about English studies at Millikin? I
love how all the English related activities, programs
and classes run together to create an English community
of friends. There is always someone to say "hello" to
in the English office--or at least someone from whom you
may steal M&Ms.
Who
is your favorite authors? Jane Austen
What
do you like to write? I have found that I am most absorbed
when I write essays and short short stories.
What
is your advice for future English majors? Love your professors.

I
am originally from the city of Chicago. Throughout my
time at Millikin I participated in both volleyball and
softball. I was also very involved in the school paper,
the Decaturian, where I was Features Editor during
my junior year and Sports Editor during my senior year.
I
am planning on getting into retail management through
Walgreens, which is a company that I have worked for for
4 years. I hope to re-located to Florida within a few
years.
My
favorite aspect of English studies at Millikin would have
to be the professors. I have enjoyed the faculty so much
and they have been so helpful and personable that it created
a very helpful academic environment.
Who
are your favorite authors? Judy Blume and Willa Cather
What
do you like to write? Free verse poetry, and short fiction
What
is your advice for future English majors? Soak up all the
opportunities available to you through your major. Get to
know your professors and your fellow English majors well.
And don't be afraid to push your writing capabilities. Bend
your limitations and learn how to take criticism because
it only makes you a stronger writer.

I
am someone torn in multiple directions, but all of them
are creative. I write haiku, short poetry and various
forms of fiction and plan to continue submitting in the
hopes of some day having many works published. I am originally
from Minnesota and will be returning to the Twin Cities
upon graduation to embark on the adventure of life in
the real world.
For
the next year I will be working as building manager at
a large café in Minnesota. There, I will be in
charge of all of the café staff and ordering various
products. In the future I would like to open my own café/performance
venue and run my own small publishing company.
What
did you like best about English studies at Millikin? I
liked working with such talented and accommodating faculty
in all of my courses, but some favorites of mine were
Writing Seminar, Global Haiku Traditions and Advanced
Writing: Screenplay.
My
advice to future English majors would be to get as much
out of your courses as possible. Have a life outside
of class, but don't take your education for granted. Reaching
the end of your career as a student and looking back on
all you have accomplished and the wealth of knowledge and
resources you have to draw on is an amazing feeling. Put
the effort in and you will walk away feeling empowered.

I
was born and raised in the city of St. Louis, MO. I come
from a very conservative Catholic family although they
have always supported my creative obsessions such as art.
I went to an all girls Catholic high school which ultimately
built me up as a empowered young woman. Since then I have
grown as an artist tremendously. Currently I am graduating
with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in painting and sculpture
and an English Literature minor. More specifically I work
with oil painting and fabric sculpture.
What
are your plans for the next year and the future? I am
not really sure what I will be doing after I graduate
as far as career choices go. I hope to utilize my design
skills in whatever I choose to do.
What
did you like best about English studies at Millikin? I
really enjoyed the level of intelligence that the teachers
had exhibited while I was in class.
Who
are your favorite authors? I really like the book, Even
Cowgirls Get the Blues. I also like Dan Brown for
leisure reading and just recently finished a Kurt Vonnegut
book.
