Students Attend 9th Annual Self-Employment in the Arts Conference
A group of students attended the Self-Employment in the Arts (SEA) Conference in Lisle, IL on February 27th-28th. The focus of this conference is on the business of art. The conference was developed nine years ago centered on the idea that artists who have business skills, market knowledge, a network, and access to resources will succeed as a professional artist. Through artist-led panels and discussions, the SEA Conference helps students, artists, and educators develop these tools.
Brady Rhoades, senior commercial art major at Millikin, took second place in the business plan competition. zeroeightdesign, Brady’s company, specializes in creative and innovativemarketing and branding solutions.
Craig Ryan, studio art major, showcased one of his latest sculptures in the art exhibit at the conference. In his sculpture entitled “Stepmother,” Craig utilized zinc plated steel wire to create a linear female figure.
The conference was made available to the Millikin Campus. Some of these students attended the conference as part of the Arts & Entrepreneurship curriculum at Millikin and others attended because they are passionate about making a living in the arts.

This crisis has arisen for a plethora of reasons, as area teachers and administrators discovered during last year’s Attracting Students to IT conference held here at Millikin.
This year, we wish to move to the next stage —exploring strategies to kindle student interest in computing. To this end, Millikin University is holding a second conference focused on this vital topic. Please plan on attending or sending a representative from your school...
