Student Life
Being involved on campus is an integral part of the Millikin experience. Even as a first-year student, you have a multitude of opportunities to develop your leadership skills and forge relationships with other students through co-curricular involvement. Here are just a few examples of opportunities available to you:
- Be a member of the University Center Board, and learn to schedule and promote entertainers, movies, dances, major concerts, and other large campus events.
- Plan activities that heighten the Millikin Big Blue spirit by joining the Homecoming Committee or the Fall Family Weekend Committee.
- Join organizations that represent your academic major and career interest — such as the American Chemical Society, the Student Education Association, the National Student Nurses’ Association, or the Music Educators National Conference. There are also several honor societies that you may become a part of that will recognize your academic excellence.
- Interested in the media? Write, edit, and publish the Decaturian (the campus newspaper), or the literary magazine, Collage. You will be joining an award-winning team. You also have the opportunity to become a DJ on the student-run campus radio station, WJMU-FM “The Quad”.
- Help provide community service (and learn a lot along the way) through organizations like Alpha Phi Omega or the Human Service Connection.
- Attend the College of Fine Arts recitals and concerts. They are free, scheduled virtually every night, and the performances are of such professional quality that you may just forget you are watching your friends perform.
- Explore the Center for Multicultural Student Affairs (CMSA) to learn about different cultures and make connections with interesting people. The CMSA also sponsors cultural events and provides support for organizations that promote understanding, knowledge, friendships, and awareness. Past programs have included Tastes of Culture and Heritage Month Celebrations.
- Participate in intramural sports, start a daily fitness routine, or take a group exercise class at the Decatur Indoor Sports Center (DISC).
- Promote school spirit by trying out for the Millikin Cheerleading Team or the Millikin Dance Team, or by joining the Big Blue Spirit Crew.
What students were saying about First Week in 2006
“I feel that First Week was an important part of my experience as a first year student because it helps you get to know people and I know it made me feel like I wasn’t just getting dropped off at college and didn’t know what to do. Everyone helped me out!”
“So many other colleges just throw their students into it and they’re either going to sink or swim. The whole time here, I felt like I was a really important part of something especially at the final ceremony. I met so many great people who I know will be great friends forever. By the time classes started, I felt so comfortable, there was nothing left to be worried about!”
“It was a blast!”
“I think it (First Week) is a crucial part to your first year. I felt like I had an advantage over people at other schools that do not have this program.”
What students were saying about their Orientation Leaders (OLs)
“My Orientation Leaders are incredible. They are always there to give good advice and help us with any stress problems or any other problems. It was helpful to know some upperclassmen before school started, and they were eager to answer questions we had.”
“My OLs were great. They were super helpful and always willing to take the time to make my First Week experience worthwhile.”
“I love my Orientation Leaders! I think they have provided me with excellent ideas, stories, and resources.”
