To
illustrate the benefits to the Millikin community provided by supporting
the Committee on Global Issues, the following are a sample of services
provided with the budget resources throughout the past several years:
- A
campus visit and master classes by acclaimed French pianist Yves
Henry
- Campus
visits by Francophone literature authors Paul Tiyambe and Evelyne
Accad
- Two
workshops and a public lecture by Dr. Gurga on Japanese haiku
- Three
presentations by author Mark Ritchie, Yanomamo Shaman Shoefoot, and
translator Gary Dawson about the life of the Yanomamo people in the
rainforest
- Three
lectures by Dr. Andrew Wilson concerning the Clinton
Administration’s role in the Northern Irish Peace Process
- Assistance
for Professor Shields conducting research the Dominican Republic
- Funds
for Professor Mittal and Professor Jacobs for travel to conferences
in France and Australia, respectively
- Partial
funding for a conference entitled “Transcultural Health Care: A
Worldwide Imperative” with Transcultural Nursing founder Madeleine
Leininger
- Small
grant funds supplied to Professors Alabi and Toepfer to expand the
scope of the immersion course Connections: Biology and Literature of the Caribbean
- Small
grant to Professor Mittal to aid in developing two Gandhi exhibits,
two videos about Gandhi and his influence, and posters about Gandhi
- A
visit by the European Union expert Lisa Conant
- Numerous
grants to students to assist in projects and globally oriented
immersion courses. Some
examples include:
- Assisting
ten students for a January immersion at the Buck Island Reef
National Monument
- Financial
assistance to help her study in the Dominican Republic,
- Small
grant to help a student study in immigrant issues in Germany
- In
2004, six $100 grants to students for globally-oriented immersions
- Provided
Professor Duran and the Spanish department $750 for the purchase of
books, videos and other media-related materials to assist Spanish
students in their studies
- Provided
funds for advertising a wide array of events related to global
issues over the years. Advertising
funds were used to purchase brochures, flyers, radio, television,
and newspaper announcements, etc.
- Provided
Staley Library significant sums of money to expand its collection of
materials concerning global issues, including a 4-volume
Encyclopedia of the United Nations and International Agreements and
reference materials for a Yugoslav Drama course taught by Professor
Pribisic.
