Description
The course will begin with a brief historical overview of the Holocaust, including whether and how it might usefully be considered "unique." We will consider the Holocaust from the point of view of perpetrators and bystanders, but most of our time will be spent with survivors' testimony, written and filmed, and the issues it raises. What is the situation of survivors? What can the testimony of witnesses mean to us, here and now? How does a non-survivor audience impact survivor testimony? We will consider the work of writers and film-makers such as Primo Levi and Tadeusz Borowski,
Steven Spiegelman and Claude Lanzmann, to address questions about the (mis)representation of the Holocaust in various forms--historical, religious, artistic, etc.
