Description

This course is designed to introduce students to the methods, theories, and concepts of cultural anthropology. Drawing on primary and secondary works by anthropologists who have specialized in various parts of the world, we will learn how to understand cultures through their ways of doing kinship, religion, gender, etc. Students will scrutinize assumptions about how our own ways of thinking and doing are “normal” or “natural.” Another goal is to provide students with a perspective of the human condition that is global in scope while remaining sensitive to local manifestations of cultural diversity.
